What that means for ducts
Retrofit-era ductwork
About 41% of Hurst's homes went up before 1980, which is before central air was designed into a house rather than added to it. Duct runs in that stock were threaded through attics and crawl spaces after the fact, often more than once, and the flex in them has had decades of Texas attic heat. Expect route surprises, expect joints that have worked loose, and expect a system nobody has opened.

02Working in Hurst

Hurst holds the oldest housing of anywhere we work in the Mid-Cities, and almost nothing has been added in the past fifteen years, so what we open here is generally a 1960s or 70s ranch that has had its equipment replaced two or three times over. Each replacement was faster and cheaper than a duct renovation, so the new unit got bolted to the old plenum. We regularly find a modern air handler pushing into a transition built for a machine nobody has manufactured in forty years. That mismatch shows up as noise, as static pressure the blower was never rated for, and as dirt driven into the coil face rather than caught by the filter. The other Hurst particular is what the original ductwork is wrapped in. Insulation and tape on pre-1980 systems can contain asbestos, and it is not something you brush to find out. When the material looks the part we stop, tell you, and recommend testing before any tool goes through it. That is a slower and less profitable visit and it is the correct one.

Older houses are where microbial indications actually turn up, usually downstream of a moisture event nobody logged. Two rules apply and neither is negotiable: the source of the moisture is addressed first or the growth returns regardless, and porous material such as duct-board liner cannot be effectively cleaned — that is replacement work, not treatment. We will tell you which of the two you are looking at before anything is applied.

Source removal first, then treatment where there's a documented indication. Any company that offers it the other way around is selling theater.
Our ranch house is from 1968 and we just replaced the AC. Should the ducts have been done then?
The plenum and the transition should at least have been looked at, and frequently they are not. A new unit tied into an old plenum can move less air than the one it replaced. We put gauges across the system and show you the number, because that tells you whether you are looking at a cleaning problem, a fitting problem, or a system that is genuinely fine.
How would we know if there is asbestos in the duct insulation?
Not by looking, and we would not claim certainty either. Material of that era, particularly the wrap on trunk lines and the tape at the joints, sometimes contains it. If your system looks like a candidate we stop and recommend a lab test rather than proceeding, because disturbing it is the one action that turns it into a real problem. The test is inexpensive next to the alternative.
A bedroom was added when the garage was converted and it never keeps up.
Those rooms are usually the weakest performer in a Hurst house. The conversion typically pulled a branch off the nearest trunk without adding any return path, so conditioned air arrives with nowhere to go and the room sits warm no matter how clean the duct is. Giving that room a way back to the return fixes what cleaning cannot.
