What that means for ducts
Retrofit-era ductwork
About 30% of Kaufman's homes went up before 1980, which is before central air was designed into a house rather than added to it. Duct runs in that stock were threaded through attics and crawl spaces after the fact, often more than once, and the flex in them has had decades of Texas attic heat. Expect route surprises, expect joints that have worked loose, and expect a system nobody has opened.

A furnace or air handler gets replaced when it finally quits; the duct stays where it is. We put in a new system a couple of years ago and the house still will not balance. Why?
Because the new unit inherited the old duct, which in Kaufman is the normal situation. A bigger or more efficient blower pushing into an undersized return and a thirty-year-old trunk just relocates the bottleneck. How do I know whether we are on gas or electric, and why does it change the visit?
Look for a metal flue pipe leaving the cabinet and a gas line running to it. If both are there you have a gas furnace, and the inspection has to cover the burner compartment and the flue connection alongside the duct. All-electric homes have neither, so the visit concentrates on the coil, the heat strips and the drain. Telling us which you have when you call saves time on site.
Our furnace sits in a hall closet rather than the attic. Does that matter?
It changes what the system breathes. In these older Kaufman houses the closet is often part of the return path, with the grille built into the door, which means everything stored in there gets drawn toward the blower. We check what is in the closet, whether the door seals, and on a gas unit whether it still has the combustion air opening it was built with.
