Lancaster divides between the older streets near the square, where central air was retrofitted into houses built long before anyone expected it, and the 2000s subdivisions out toward Pleasant Run. In the older half the problem we find is not dirt, it is mismatch. The duct dates to whenever the system was first added, sized for a smaller and slower blower, and it has since had one or two equipment replacements dropped on top of it. A modern air handler pushing more air through the same narrow trunk and the same single return runs at high static pressure, which is loud, hard on the blower and capable of freezing a coil in July. Cleaning that system gives you a clean undersized system and the same complaint. Most homes here run electric equipment, so there is no flue to check and the evidence sits at the coil, the filter rack and the return grille. That is where we look before quoting anything.

How do you know cleaning part of the system is enough?

Why are return ducts dirtier than supply ducts?

Because they run upstream of the filter. Returns pull raw room air — dust, pet hair, fibers, pollen tracked in on shoes — straight into the ductwork before anything filters it. Supplies only see air the filter has already scrubbed. That asymmetry is why return-side cleaning is often the smartest partial job.

We replaced the AC three years ago and the house is louder and no more comfortable.

That is the pattern in the older half of Lancaster. New equipment moves more air than the original duct was built to carry, so the noise is pressure rather than a defect. A static pressure reading at the air handler settles it in a few minutes. The remedy is usually more return area or a larger trunk section, and neither one is a cleaning.

Our coil iced over in the middle of summer. Are the ducts blocked?

Restriction is the usual cause, but it is far more often on the return side or at the filter than deep in the branches. A dense filter in an undersized grille starves the coil, the surface temperature drops below freezing and airflow stops altogether. We check filter type, grille size and static pressure before assuming there is anything inside the duct at all.

Our house is one of the newer ones off Pleasant Run. Same issues?

Different ones. That stock was built with the equipment and the duct designed together, so the mismatch problem largely disappears and what shows up instead is age: sagging flex, an unopened coil, insulation compressed at the straps. Two decades in, an inspection is reasonable. A cleaning frequently is not, and we will say which one you need.
