We rent a duplex near campus. Is a duct cleaning worth asking the owner for?
Usually not as your first ask. Behind the closet door of a unit like yours there is an air handler and a short length of duct, and that is all of it, so there is little to clean. Ask instead for the correct filter size and a change interval in writing, and report a return grille that whistles or a register that sweats. Those two complaints get real repairs approved; a general cleaning request rarely does.
Our 1936 house has ducts running through the knee walls upstairs. Is that bad?
It is common here and it is worth inspecting. A knee-wall pocket is unconditioned, so anything that leaks there is conditioned air paid for and lost, and any joint that opened is pulling that pocket's dust into the supply. The camera finds it quickly. What we usually recommend afterward is sealing and support work rather than cleaning.
The house was rebuilt in 2016 and the study is always stuffy. Are the ducts dirty?
Almost certainly not at that age. A closed door on a room with supply air and no return path pressurizes the room and stops the supply from entering properly. The fix is a transfer grille, an undercut door, or a dedicated return, and it costs a fraction of a cleaning. We check that before recommending anything else.
