What happens when a filter sits loose in an oversized slot. Air takes the easy path, so a substantial fraction is never filtered at all and its dust goes straight to the coil. The visual tell is a filter that has loaded in patches rather than uniformly. Sealing the slot often does more measurable good than raising the filter's MERV rating.
