We're a military family renting near Randolph. What can we reasonably ask for?
A fair question and a common one here. Ask the owner for the filter size and a change schedule in writing, and report sweating vents or a whistling return promptly. Documented airflow complaints get repairs approved far more often than a general request for duct cleaning ever does.
First cold morning of the year, the house smells like burning. Is that dangerous?
Usually it is dust on electric heat strips, which nearly every Schertz home has instead of a gas furnace, and it burns off within minutes. If the smell lasts, repeats on later runs, or comes with tripping breakers, stop using heat and have the air handler inspected before anything else.
There's no furnace in our attic, just one cabinet. What actually gets inspected?
In an all-electric Schertz home that cabinet is the air handler: blower, evaporator coil, heat strips and filter rack in one box. It is also where nearly every genuine air-quality problem starts. We open it, photograph the coil and check the condensate drain before discussing the duct at all.
