MERV Ratings Explained — And Why a Higher Number Can Make Things Worse
MERV 13 in a one-inch slot is one of the most common well-intentioned mistakes in a Texas house. What the scale measures, and how to pick against your blower instead of against the box.
MERV is a real, standardised measure and the number on the box does mean something. What the box does not say is that the filter has to work with the system it goes into, and that a filter your blower cannot pull through will make your air quality worse rather than better.
01What the scale actually measures
MERV comes from ASHRAE Standard 52.2 and it describes how efficiently a filter captures particles in specified size ranges. Higher numbers capture smaller particles and capture more of them. MERV 8 handles the coarse end well; MERV 11 picks up more fine dust and pollen; MERV 13 starts capturing the smaller particles people care about most.
It is a genuine measurement, not marketing, and the ratings are comparable between manufacturers. That is the part that works.
02The part the box leaves out
Capturing more means resisting airflow more. Every filter creates a pressure drop, and the drop rises with efficiency and falls with surface area. A one-inch filter has very little surface area, so pushing its MERV up raises resistance sharply.
Your blower has a finite ability to overcome that. Past its limit, airflow across the system drops — which means less air delivered to rooms, longer run times, a colder evaporator coil in cooling, and in the worst case a coil that freezes. A frozen coil is the endpoint of a well-intentioned filter upgrade more often than anyone admits.
03Why a deeper filter changes the arithmetic
A four- or five-inch media cabinet holds many times the filter area of a one-inch slot. More area at the same efficiency means a lower pressure drop — so you can run a higher MERV and resist airflow less than the one-inch filter you replaced.
This is the single upgrade we recommend most, and the reason is not efficiency alone. It also stops the monthly ritual: most households move to changing the media once or twice a year.
04How to choose if you are staying with one-inch
Do not automatically buy the highest number on the shelf. For a typical system with a one-inch slot, MERV 8 to 11 is the honest range, and the specific choice depends on your blower and your duct.
And change it on time. A MERV 8 replaced every quarter outperforms a MERV 13 left in for a year, because a loaded filter's pressure drop climbs steeply as it fills. The maintenance beats the rating.
05The thing that beats both
Sealing the filter. A filter sitting loose in an oversized slot with a half-inch gap around it is largely decorative — air takes the easy path around the edge, carrying its dust straight to the coil. We find this constantly and it is cheap to fix with a proper frame.
Sealing an existing MERV 8 often does more measurable good than upgrading an unsealed slot to MERV 13.
Match the filter to what your blower can actually pull through, seal it so air cannot bypass it, and change it on schedule. If you want genuinely better filtration, buy surface area — a deep media cabinet — rather than buying a bigger number in the same thin slot.
