One Room Never Cools: Working Through the Causes in Order
It is almost never the thermostat and almost never the air conditioner. The five causes we find, ordered by how often they turn out to be the answer.
Every house has one. The bonus room, the back bedroom, the office over the garage. Homeowners usually suspect the air conditioner and often get quoted a new one. In our experience the equipment is fine and the air is simply not arriving, and the reasons come in a fairly predictable order.
01One: the branch to that room is crushed or disconnected
This is the most common single cause and the easiest to confirm. Flexible duct draped over a joist, compressed at a bend, or pulled off a takeoff entirely. A tight radius elbow in flex can cost half the airflow to whatever is downstream of it.
A disconnected run in an attic is the extreme version, and it is dramatic when you find it: the room gets essentially nothing while the attic gets conditioned beautifully.
02Two: no balancing, so the short runs win
Air takes the path of least resistance. Without balancing dampers, the rooms closest to the air handler get more than their share and the far ones get what is left. Nothing is broken — the system was simply never balanced.
This is the cheapest real fix on the list. In-line dampers in the branch runs let airflow be apportioned deliberately, and on a two-storey DFW house it solves the upstairs-is-hot complaint far more often than an equipment change does.
03Three: the return side is starved
Everyone looks at supply. If the system cannot get air back, it cannot deliver it either. Undersized return area for the tonnage shows up as rooms that never balance, doors that thump when the system starts, and a blower working permanently harder than it should.
The tell: close the door to the problem room and see whether it gets worse. If it does, that room's air cannot get back to the return and you have a return-path problem, not a supply problem.
04Four: the duct crosses a hot attic uninsulated
A Texas attic in August is brutally hot, and thin or fallen-away insulation on a duct crossing it means you lose cooling capacity on the way to the room. The longest run suffers most, which is usually the far room.
There is a second failure here: a cold duct surface in a hot humid attic can drop below the dew point and sweat, which soaks the insulation and keeps it soaked.
05Five: the room was never in the design
Converted garages, enclosed patios, additions and finished attics are frequently tied into a system that was sized before they existed. The equipment is not undersized for the original house — it is undersized for the house as it is now.
Adding a run to a trunk with nothing left to give simply steals air from another room, so this one gets scoped against the system's actual remaining capacity rather than just tapped in.
Work the list in order before anyone quotes you equipment. Four of the five causes are duct problems with duct-priced fixes, and the fifth is a design question that a new air conditioner would not answer either.
