UV Lights in HVAC: What They Actually Do (And What They Don't)
Keeping the coil clean is a real, defensible use of UV. Sterilising the air passing by it is not — contact time does not work that way. Plus why ozone validation matters.
UV-C in a residential HVAC system is one of the most oversold products in our trade and also a genuinely useful one, depending entirely on what you are told it does. The difference comes down to what the lamp is pointed at.
01The legitimate use: coil sterilisation
Your evaporator coil is wet for the entire cooling season. It is dark, it is cool, and it has continuous moisture — which makes it the one place in the system where biological growth genuinely establishes. A UV-C lamp aimed at the coil surface, running continuously, does keep that growth down.
That is a real effect with a real mechanism: the coil sits in front of the lamp permanently, so contact time is not a constraint. A clean coil also maintains heat transfer and airflow, which is a performance benefit as well as a hygiene one.
02The oversold use: air sterilisation
Air moving through a duct passes a lamp in a fraction of a second. Germicidal effect depends on dose, and dose is intensity multiplied by time — so a very short exposure delivers very little dose regardless of how the lamp is marketed.
In-duct air sterilisation claims should be read against that arithmetic. Buy UV to keep your coil clean. If someone is selling it as an air purifier, they are selling you the wrong mechanism.
03Ozone: the question to ask before anything else
Some air-treatment technologies generate ozone as a by-product. Ozone is a respiratory irritant, which is precisely why a zero-ozone validation exists as a separate standard for these devices.
If you are considering any in-duct air treatment beyond filtration, insist on that validation. We only fit devices that carry it — and we would generally rather sell you a deeper filter than a device that improves your air by adding something to it.
04Lamps are a consumable
UV lamp output declines well before the lamp stops visibly glowing. A lamp that looks like it is working may be delivering a fraction of its rated output, so replacement is on a schedule rather than on failure.
That is an ongoing cost and it belongs in the decision. A UV system nobody re-lamps is decoration with a running cost.
05Where it fits in the order of purchases
After filtration, after sealing, after the coil and blower have actually been cleaned. UV keeps a clean coil clean; it is not a way to avoid cleaning a fouled one.
On a system with a genuinely dirty coil, the correct sequence is clean it first, then decide whether UV is worth it to keep it that way.
UV-C at the coil is a legitimate product with a defensible mechanism and a real maintenance schedule. UV as an air purifier is arithmetic that does not hold. Ask which one you are being sold, and ask about ozone validation before anything goes in.
