We have replaced the AC twice. Does that affect the ducts?

It affects the connection more than the runs. Each change leaves a new transition at the plenum, and by the third one that joint is often a patchwork that no longer seals. There is fine grit on the furniture even with the windows shut. Are the ducts the source?
